Place of Worship Overview

The local community here first held Church of Scotland services in an air raid shelter of a local garage in 1940, then in a local shop at 38 Stamperland Crescent, before a small, two storey “hall church” was built in Stamperland Gardens in 1941. This building would eventually become the halls of Stamperland Parish Church when it was erected in 1964, to a design by architect firm J Thompson King & Partners.

Noted for its distinctive concrete bell-tower, three stained glass windows by Gordon Webster, which were previously located in Woodside Parish Church and an 1897 pipe organ by Lewis & Co of Brixton, which had itself been relocated from Regent Place United Presbyterian Church in Dennistoun. Other interesting items included various furnishings from the 1938 Glasgow Empire Exhibition Church of Scotland church and a bas-relief of a mythical pelican on the outside wall.

Stamperland Church was united with Netherlee Church in January 2020. Due to declining congregational numbers, rising costs, a nationwide church rationalisation programme and faced with the urgent need to replace the slates and leadwork of the sanctuary roof of Netherlee church, the difficult decision was taken by the combined congregation of the two churches to close Stamperland in 2022. The church and grounds were sold later that year and the manse in 2023.

Many of the items inside the church were removed, for reuse by other local churches and organisations. The Gordon Webster stained glass windows have been returned to the artist’s family, the Lewis pipe organ was refurbished and moved to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Cork, Ireland, and Book of Remembrance, font, cradle roll, furniture from the 1938 Exhibition and other items were moved to the now renamed Netherlee & Stamperland Parish Church.

The now former Stamperland Parish Church was bought by members of the local Sunni Muslim community, who are in the process of entirely renovating the building. Once complete, the Mosque will provide worship spaces, educational facilities and recreational and community rooms.
