Church Overview

This is the second or possibly third church to be built on this site. The current building is thought to date from around 1783 and incorporates a 17th century armorial panel and possesses a 1632  Burgerhuys bell in its bellcote, both presumably retained from the previous church.

It has an outside stairway to the laird’s loft and a burial aisle to the Pringle family on the east gable. The chancel and vestry were added in 1905-06 when the interior was entirely reordered, its western gallery removed and the original box pews and other fixtures and fittings inside replaced. The 18th century ceiling plaster was also removed during this refurbishment, exposing the great wooden beams above.

Today the sanctuary is light and airy, with stained glass only found in the chancel. Next to the church is a stable block, once associated with the adjacent former manse. In 2003, the stables were converted into a small church hall, with kitchen and toilets.
