Church Overview
This prominently sited building with its beloved landmark tower topped with its iconic crown, was originally built for the Free Church, by prominent architect John James Stevenson, in what he described as “later Scotch Gothic” style but is today known as Scots Gothic Revival. Work commenced in 1883, using stone brought from Polmaise, and the church opened on 3 September 1885. It has been described by Historic Environment Scotland as “one of J J Stevenson’s finest buildings”.
St Leonard’s quickly became Perth’s pre-eminent Free Church, then a United Free Church from 1900 to 1929, when that denomination reunited with Church of Scotland. Over the years, the congregation has since united and linked with several churches in the town, most recently forming a parish grouping known as the Perth City Centre Kirks.
Its interior is largely intact, with a decorative timber roof, panelled galleries on three sides and canopied pulpit. Its pipe organ is by the firm of Bryceson Bros & Ellis and dates to 1881, and was moved into St Leonard’s in 1985 when it was relocated from Morningside United Presbyterian Church in Edinburgh.
