Church Overview

Commissioned in 1897 by the Free Church of Scotland and designed by local architect James Robert Rhind, by the time the building was completed in 1901 its congregation was part of the new United Free Church of Scotland, which in turn united with the Church of Scotland in 1929. Rhind had originally intended for this pretty Gothic Revival church to have its own tower and spire but, in the end, the extra £1000 cost to construct it proved too great and only the lower part of the tower was built.

Soldiers were billeted in the adjacent church halls during both World Wars and these rooms were extended and remodelled on several occasions during the late 20th century. The chancel was also heavily reordered in 1958, which included relocating the pulpit, so that it could be viewed from everywhere in the church, and installing fixed choir stalls. The three manual organ, that had been purchased from Taymouth Castle in 1923, was also overhauled, moving its pipes so that the church’s magnificent rose window was no longer obscured. This organ was eventually replaced in 1987 with an electronic organ by Makin organs Ltd. Another impressive stained glass window, dedicated to the Rev John MacGilp, was removed and professionally restored before reinstallation in 2019.

Significant further refurbishment of the halls and church interior has taken place in recent years, providing enhanced facilities across the building for the use of the congregation and local community groups.
