Church Overview

The present Neo Gothic building, seating 600, was erected in 1860 to replace a meeting house built at Viewfield in 1752. The congregations gathering on this site have been part of the Secession Movement of 1733, the United Presbyterian and United Free Churches before joining the Church of Scotland in 1929.

The only surviving church by the local firm of architects F & W Mackison, its interior remains largely as it was constructed, though the striking stained glass window of the Creation story above the pulpit is a modern intervention by the artist Christian Shaw. Staircases from the vestibule lead up to the gallery, held aloft by decorated cast iron columns, and down to the sunken church hall.

Some of the pews are believed to have been saved from the meeting house that stood on the site before the current building and much of woodwork and furnishings in the chancel was the work of local craftsman William Summers and installed 1946-47. A pipe organ by the firm of Lewis & Co of Brixton was installed in the west end of the church in 1949 and later rebuilt by Rushworth & Dreaper.

In 1909, the congregation of Viewfield and the congregation of the nearby Erskine Church united in the Viewfield building, which then became known as the Viewfield-Erskine Church. Its congregation then linked with that of the historic Church of the Holy Rude as part of a further reorganisation of Church of Scotland parishes and congregations.

Church was closed and marketed for sale in October 2025.
