Church Overview

Built in bright red sandstone, in a near cruciform plan, this neo-Gothic building was designed by noted Scottish architect Hippolyte Blanc in 1894 and first dedicated in 1895. It was constructed to replace the 1838 parish kirk sanctuary that was repurposed as a church hall. 

Its interior is beautifully detailed, from the mosaic-tiled vestibule to to the polished sandstone columns of its arcaded aisles that lead the visitor’s eyes upwards to the fine barrel-vaulted timber roof. The church also possesses a fine alabaster reredos depicting Moses, St Paul and the Last Supper has a finely carved canopy and stands above a mosaic pavement of the Paschal Lamb. The scene is complimented by the nearby richly carved pulpit, communion table and font.

The stained glass of the Ascension window is from the renowned studio of Morris & Co. as are the depictions of “Faith, Hope and Charity”. Other stained glass artists include Gordon Webster, who installed several works, including a depiction of St George as a memorial to those that fell in World War One, and James Ballantine & Son.

Various memorials line the church’s walls and the pipe organ, installed in 1895, is by organ-builders William Hill and Son, rebuilt in 1965 by successor firm Hill, Norman and Beard. 

The congregation of Troon Old entered a formal union with the congregations of Portland and St Meddan’s Parish Churches in July 2024 and Troon Old Parish Church is sadly expected to close as a consequence in the near future. The Troon Development Trust is working to raise the funds necessary to purchase this historic building and turn it into an active community hub.
