Church Overview
Passers-by, visiting Ullapool, might be forgiven for thinking this little white-harled and grey slated building, is a wee shop rather than a church. Prior to its religious transformation in 1988, by Inverness-based architect Robert Hamilton MacIntyre, the building was, in fact, a bakery and baker’s shop.
The local Catholic community had been seeking a chapel of their own for many years. Following a failed joint ecumenical bid with the local Episcopal community to buy the town’s little ‘Telford Church‘ (newspapers of the day reported the owners would not sell sell it to Roman Catholics) the congregation opted instead to buy and convert this building into the most most north-westerly Catholic church on the Scottish mainland. The former Parliamentary Kirk is now a local museum.
