Church Overview

Built 1830-40, to an Italianate design by Patrick Wilson, remodelled and enlarged by Thomas Mackenzie, 1844. The building has been beautified over the years including the laying of mosaic tiles throughout the chancel and aisles. The organ loft was created in 1906 to house the Bevington organ that replaced an earlier instrument. The frontage is adorned with a wheel window, the entrance sheltered by an arcaded logia and flanked by a campanile. Stained glass by Barnett of Newcastle in apse.

A large canvas in the apse (1907) and painting behind the font (1911) are the works of William Brassie Hole RSA. The apse wall was deemed too unstable for a fresco, so Hole painted his “Last Supper” scene on a canvas which was then affixed to the wall, the artist describing this piece as perhaps his greatest work. Haswell Millar painted a copy of one of Hole’s works in 1937 that hangs in the south transept.
