Church Overview

This church, with tower and spire, is composed of whinstone with red sandstone dressings. It was built in 1873-6 and designed by David Thomson.

It possesses some stunning stained glass, including one in the south transept of St Paul, by Morris & Co to a design by Edward Burne-Jones, and a depiction of the Ascension in the east window. Christopher Whall designed a magnificent window showing scenes from the life of St Ninian, including showing the saint with the plans for his church at Candida Casa; St Martin supplying masons for the building work and several miracles attributed to St Ninian.

The church’s interesting pipe organ came from the Cally Palace and is of unusual design.

Originally called Sorbie Parish Church, following a union with Kirkinner Church (which subsequently closed) the congregation recently decided to change the name of the building to Millisle Kirk. It is now linked with Mochrum Parish Church.

Services

Once a year, in early September, Millisle organises an ecumenical service, with the clergy and congregations of other local churches, in the historic Cruggleton Kirk with the permission of the farmer in Cruggleton Farm, who owns the building.
