Church Overview

Located a short walk from the seafront and built in 1843, originally for the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland, this rectangular church with its simple classical façade fronting onto a mainly residential street, was greatly extended to the rear in 1857 to accommodate its growing congregation. By the late 19th century, the United Presbyterians had moved to another church in the town and the building was used for a time as a public hall, for “balls, entertainments, and other gatherings”.

In March 1899, the local Christian Brethren group, who had been meeting for some years in a building on Academy Street elsewhere in the town, purchased the entire property on West Portland Street for £550 and fully refurbished it, renaming it Bethany Hall. Over time, the congregation evolved and the building was renamed the Seagate Evangelical Church in 1991. The congregation today also manages the nearby Meadowgreen Centre and Café.
