Church Overview
This charming little Neo-Gothic church and its adjacent halls were designed and built for the local Methodist congregation by local architect William Forsyth McGibbon between 1880-81. The gable facing onto the street has an attractive arrangement of a three-light window sitting above five small round-headed windows, with a handsome square tower sitting alongside.
Its quiet and peaceful interior was lit by some excellent stained glass by the Lancaster firm Abbot & Co that was installed in 1957. It also possessed a very fine pipe organ by Forster and Andrews, installed in 1886 and altered by Glasgow organ-builder Henry Hilsdon around 1928.
Worship ceased and the church closed in October 2022, you can watch the final memorial service here. The significant pipe organ was subsequently dismantled and taken to Ireland by the organ-builders Neiland & Creane, who fully refurbished it before installing it in St Michael’s Church in Gorey. You can hear it being played once again at its dedication ceremony here.
Following closure, plans were initially submitted to demolish the historic unlisted church and replace it with an entirely new building. These were eventually withdrawn and its current owners submitted a new plan in July 2025 to convert the church and its halls into an arts and wedding venue and community hub. These plans were approved by the local authority in March 2026.
Church closed in Oct 2022. Redevelopment plans underway.
