Church Overview

The first church recorded in Makerstoun was built around 1125 by the monks of Kelso Abbey and was dedicated to St Peter. The current church was erected in 1808, the date of which is still clearly inscribed on its distinctive square bell tower, located at the corner of its southern wall.

The sanctuary is light, with plain glass windows and its original simple pine pews, pulpit and precentor’s desk, with a gallery upstairs. Adjoining the church is an annexe, added in 2012 to provide a welcoming meeting room, with kitchen and toilet facilities. The setting of the church and churchyard is incredibly beautiful and peaceful.
