Church Overview
This magnificent red freestone church in the heart of Kirn is situated on the seafront, just a few minutes walk from the Western Ferries terminal in Dunoon.
Built from stone quarried near Corrie on the isle of Arran, to a neo-Norman design by architect Peter MacGregor Chalmers, it opened on the 25th September 1907 at a total cost of £6,452 18/6. The capitals of the columns on the arches that separate the transept from the nave are particularly accomplished.
The pulpit and communion table are carved from Austrian oak and contain various carved symbols, including the Tree of Life, lambs, eagles and a serpent. It had no stained glass windows when it was first built, but several have been inserted since as memorials to various individuals. The seven-branched candlestick is a memorial to those local men that fell in the Second World War.
The congregation of Kirn united with the nearby congregation of the United Free Church of Sandbank in 1929, when the two denominations joined together. Sandbank was demolished after the two congregations fully amalgamated in 1936.
