Church Overview
St Munn’s church was built overlooking the Holy Loch, on the site of a Celtic monastery. Its tower dates from a15th-century collegiate church. Present building dates from 1841, by Thomas Burns with interior remodelled by P MacGregor Chalmers in 1899. Important stained glass by Stephen Adam and Alfred Webster. Water-powered organ by Norman & Beard 1909. Ancient graveyard with fine 18th-century carved stones. Mausoleum of Dukes of Argyll, Douglas vault. Grave of Elizabeth Blackwell, first lady doctor.
Historic Kilmun was set up in 2008, to raise money for repairs and seek a sustainable future for St Munn’s. By 2012, this organisation had raised £1.15m for repairs to church and adjacent mausoleum. Final regular service was held there in 2018 and the sale to Historic Kilmun from the Church of Scotland was finalised in 2021.
