Church Overview

Built on the site of earlier churches, the Gothic Revival Old Parish Church, with its nave, aisles and square tower was designed by architect James Gordon Davis and opened in 1835.

It contained some interesting memorial panels from the 18th and 19th centuries to members of the family of Campbell of Duntroon and for many years housed three outstanding early Christian crosses, and a number of medieval sculptured stone fragments, with explanatory panels provided by Historic Environment Scotland. The crosses were moved to the nearby Kilmartin Museum following the closure and sale of the old kirk by the Church of Scotland in 2019. The old church is now privately owned and its former congregation purchased and moved into a nearby modern hall church facility.

The kirkyard contains the mausoleum of Bishop Neil Campbell and the burial enclosure of the Malcolms of Poltalloch, both containing a remarkable collection of West Highland medieval tomb slabs. The kirkyard also offers extensive views over Bronze Age burial cairns.

Church now closed and in private ownership. Kirkyard still open to the public.
