Church Overview
The building was built in 1771, by Donald Campbell of Sonachan, on the site of an earlier church thought to date back to the 13th century. Some stone fragments from that church have been incorporated into the present building. In several historic sources, the older building was referred to as “the Church of Lochawe”.
The current church’s interior was heavily remodelled in 1904 by architect James Edgar, who removed the original east and south galleries and moved the pulpit from its centre focused position to re-establish an east-west orientation as the mode of worship for the congregation. Windows were replaced, repositioned or newly cut, a doorway was blocked and another made, and a set of external stairs, that once led up to the first floor galleries, was removed.
There are many interesting tombstones in the graveyard including that of Cailean Mor (Sir Colin Campbell) from 1294 and the grand Grecian monument to Dr Robert MacIntyre.
