Church Overview
Inveravon Church was erected in 1806 adjacent to the site of its predecessor church (a medieval building that was reconstructed in 1568).
It is a rendered rectangular building with a birdcage belfry, a Gothic north porch, geometric windows with zinc cames and a simple galleried interior. The church was substantially remodelled in 1876 by renowned Scottish architect Alexander Marshall Mackenzie.
The coombe ceiling and scissor-braced roof dates to the refurbishment, as does this fine William Hill & Son pipe organ that was renovated by Walker & Co in 2009. The circa 1901 pulpit was relocated to Inveravon from the Wishart Memorial Church in Dundee.
Four Class I incised Pictish symbol stones, dating from the 6th-8th century, survive at the church. Decoration on these stones include a mirror, eagle, crescent and V-rod and an elephant head. They were moved inside the north porch of the church in 2011. There is also a fine listed kirkyard outside, with many interesting memorials and an early 19th century mausoleum belonging to the MacPherson-Grant family.
Linked for may years with the congregation of Tomintoul Parish Church, it was announced in Autumn 2025 that the Friends of Inveravon Church had been successful in their application to the Scottish Land Fund for financial support to purchase the church for the local community. This followed the difficult decision of the Church of Scotland to close the building as part of their nationwide building rationalisation programme.
