Church Overview
St Ernan’s is a simple and solid rectangular edifice constructed as mission chapel in 1899 from the local red granite with a slate roof. A triple lancet window surmounts the lean-to porch and another lean-to houses its vestry.
St Ernan (or Erana) was an uncle of St Columba and one of the twelve followers of the saint who came with him to set up and oversee the monastery on nearby Iona.
Most of its original dark-stained pews remain in place. The pulpit, communion table and font were all gifted to the church in 1952 by the local War Memorial Committee. New leaded windows were added in 1970 and a new electric organ installed in 1977. There is a war memorial in the vestibule listing the 16 local men who sacrificed their lives in World War One and Two.
The Church of Scotland has signalled its intention to dispose of St Ernan’s, a local community trust has been established to acquire it and develop it as a spiritual and cultural centre.
