Church Overview

Built between 1862 and 1864 by JD Peddie and CGH Kinnear, for the United Presbyterian Church, the  French Gothic style church replaced a much simpler 18th century “Associate Burgher” meeting house on the site, called the West United Presbyterian Church. Its silent bell tower once had a short spire, but this was removed in 1903.

In 1902, the Gothic transepts and sanctuary area were added following a significant gift from two brothers. The pine and marble sanctuary was adorned with a Neo-Gothic elaborate pulpit and screen by AG Sydney Mitchell and Wilson. Other early 20th century additions include an Grade 1 Historic Organ Certificated pipe organ by Lewis & Co and three large stained glass windows by Charles Earner Kempe of London.

It was renamed the West United Free Church in 1900, then the West Church of Scotland in 1929. When its congregation united with the congregation of Alloa’s North Church of Scotland in 2009 it became the Alloa Ludgate Church.
