Church Overview
The ruined scheduled monument remains of the earliest known church in this area are located just a short walk away from the present church. Consecrated in 1242, Abdie “Old Kirk” was still in use until 1827 when the heritors sold its roof, seats, windows at a public roup following the completion of the current building.
The “New Kirk” at Abdie was designed and constructed by influential Scottish architect William Burn in a simple round arch style with a handsome rectangular Italianate belfry above, its interior would be recast and made more comfortable, almost a century later, in 1923, by noted Glasgow architect John Jeffrey Waddell. Further reordering occurred in the 1980s at the same time as a new church hall was added.
The only item known to have transferred from the “Old Kirk” was its ancient bell, which had been recast in 1671. The church has three historic stained glass windows, installed in 1900, 1912 and 1922 and a modern memorial window installed in 2007. The war memorial windows from Dunbog church have also been installed in the church vestibule.
Abdie and Dunbog churches were united in 1965 and Dunbog closed in 1983 when the two churches were linked with Newburgh. Lindores Parish Church was formed in 2018 as a formal union between the two parish churches. The combined congregation operates from the two historic church buildings, with attached halls, serving the communities of Newburgh and the surrounding rural area.
