Church Overview

Designed by architect John Henderson, this Gothic Revival church, located close to the medieval St Bride’s Well, was consecrated on 11 September 1850. One of the donors who contributed towards the new building was future Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Between 1894-96, the nave was extended, a new porch and a new tower were added by architect Alexander Ross and further extensive remodelling and conservation work was carried out in 1950 and 2013.

The building contains an ornate stone altar and font, fine vaulted chancel and nave ceilings and Minton encaustic tiles in the sanctuary. The belfry contains bells cast by John Warner & Sons of London. The church also contains a number of fine stained glass windows, by artists including Mayer & Co, Gordon Webster and George Joseph Baguley.

A small graveyard surrounds the church, wherein lie figures such as famous art dealer Alexander Reid and Sir Francis Powell, Scottish water-colourist.
