Church Overview
A neo-perpendicular Gothic stone church with a striking square tower that was built 1812-13 on the site of an earlier church that had been dedicated in 1242, possibly to St Euchen. The church possesses four-light stained glass window, dating to 1919, that depict scenes from the life of Christ.
In the kirkyard outside are located several remarkable 17th- and 18th-century gravestones, a rare medieval “discoid” stone and the remains of a medieval building with an interesting Romanesque arch, which was used since the early 19th century as the mausoleum for the Nairne family, but may have been a part or built from architectural fragment of the previous church.
Visitors will also see the historic mort-house, carefully conserved in 2012, once used to allow the remains of the recently deceased to securely decompose without interference from bodysnatchers, intent on selling fresh corpses for medical dissection, before the remains were safely buried by their loved ones elsewhere in the kirkyard.
