Church Overview
Records show a church in Strathaven in 1288, but the present church was built in 1772 by John Park. It’s a classic symmetrical T-plan church, harled with ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins, with a five stage tower to the northwest.
The exterior and interior renovated from 1877-79 by architect Robert Alexander Bryden of the firm of Clarke and Bell. Its interior ceiling and galleries are decorated in Jacobean Renaissance style and character. The centre section of the south gallery was reserved for the family and tenants of the Duke of Hamilton and is known as ‘The Duke’s Gallery’. The sanctuary was extensively refurbished in 2018.
The original entrance to the tower is now blocked up and houses the church war memorial by Leadbetter, Fairley & Reid. There are stained glass windows throughout the building, the majority by W & J. J. Keir, with additional late 20th century windows by Crear McCartney and Gus Abbot.
