Church Overview

St John’s Church was built around 1832, to a T-plan with two timber panelled galleries along the sides of the sanctuary, supported on reeded timber columns and accessed by timber staircases in the south east and south west corners. The pew seating was reorganised in 1898 and remained unaltered until the church was closed and marketed for sale by the Church of Scotland in 2018.

The high central pulpit, with its ornate sounding board and corniced octagonal canopy above, was the main focus of the fine panelled interior of vertical pine wainscoting, decorated with a mahogany graining. There was an organ next to the pulpit by the Glasgow organ builders R. Donaldson and the interior was lit by a number of leaded and coloured glazed windows. A later church hall sat next door.
