Church Overview
Newton Church opened for public worship in 1855 as a Free Presbyterian Church, replacing a wooden church that had been used by the local Free Church congregation since 1843. Built using local sandstone from the quarries at Dumfind, it possesses some handsome stained glass, created by local firm R Farquharson & Sons, installed in 1897 in memory of the Rev James Innes, who was minister there from 1858-1894.
In 1900, following the union of the Free Church of Scotland and the United Presbyterian Church, Newton Church was known as Panbride United Free Church. Following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, the again renamed Newton Panbride Church and nearby Panbride Parish Church continued as separate congregations until they were formally united into a single congregation called Carnoustie Panbride Church in 1961.
The historic Panbride Parish Church closed in 2024 and was marketed for sale in 2025 and Carnoustie Panbride Church now forms part of an enlarged congregation known as Carnoustie: Trinity, along with Barry and Carnoustie Churches.
