Church Overview
The substantial body of the church dates from 1758, with additions and alterations made in 1813 and 1901, but it has retained fragmentary pieces of its medieval predecessor that was originally dedicated to St Cuthbert. For example, a piscina is still visible on the east wall and the chantry chapel is of the late 15th century, and now contains various memorial plaques to members of the Hunter Blair family.
In 1901 the church was renovated by John Kinross and the bell-tower was added to the design of John Murdoch. It possesses beautiful carvings on its ceiling and pulpit and a striking ‘Millennium Banner’ mounted on a pedestal made from a former pew. Tapestry cushions, from 1993, depict themes from the life and work of the community and artwork, by the local Sewing Guild, commemorate 1997 as ‘The Year of Faith’; 1998 as ‘The Year of Hope’; and 1999 as ‘The Year of Love’.
The stone font was the gift of the Fergusson family and it contains some splendid stained glass. There a number of interesting old stones in the kirkyard outside, including a memorial to local Covenanters.
