Church Overview

A simple but incredibly picturesque church on a rise overlooking the Tay by architect Thomas Martin Cappon. Built 1886-87 for around £1000, the limited budget meant the original interior was somewhat austere. As the congregation grew, so too did the donated furniture and furnishings.

In 1903-1904, the pipe organ by John Robertson Miller of Dundee was installed for a total cost of £266, over a quarter of the sum spent on building the church! The beautiful instrument was converted from water power to electricity in 1949 and then completely refurbished in 2000 by Alex Edmonstone of Perth. A beautiful brass eagle lectern was gifted in 1904, the stone font was gifted in 1894 and it elaborate and ornate wooden cover in 1929, and the carved oak pulpit was installed in 1934.

The oak Rood Screen was crafted by George Fairweather of Dundee in 1937, while the figures above it were sculpted by the artist William Lamb of Montrose and added in 1940. In a very unusual departure from stylistic norms of the day, the crucifixion scene depicts Christ as beardless.

The church possesses some fine stained glass windows too, ranging in date from 1887 to 1950. Three are by the Charles Eamer Kempe Studio, one by Frederick Vincent Hart and the magnificent west window by Alexander Russell.
