Church Overview

Known affectionally to locals as ‘the little white church on the ski road’, this handsome little cruciform church, designed by renowned architect Sir Ninian Comper, was constructed to replace a “tin tabernacle” that had been erected in 1904 by the local Scottish Episcopal community just across the road from the current building. Work began on the stone church in 1913, when its foundation stone was laid, but progress on the building was interrupted by World War One.

Unfortunately, the funds necessary to complete the church were unavailable after the conflict ended and Comper found it necessary to modify his original plans somewhat to create the beautiful church that stands there today. Eventually completed 1929-30, the building was officially consecrated on 26 July 1931.

Comper would later refer to the building as his “little gem” and his influence can be seen throughout the church that he designed “from the altar outwards.” It possesses a plain white interior, with a groin vaulted ceiling, but all visitors’ eyers are immediately drawn to the beautiful rose damask baldacchino, over the altar. This was renewed in 1982, woven by the firm of Pallu & Lake, and includes Comper’s signature detail of a strawberry. He often added this fruit in the corner of his stained glass, but the windows of St John’s were kept clear in order allow visitors to fully appreciate “the glory of the surrounding trees.”

The impressive little pipe organ was built by Christopher Dickens, grandson of author Sir Charles Dickens, and installed in 1982. It was entirely rebuilt in 2002 by Alexander F Edmondstone, who had assisted Dickens with its original installation. Check the church’s own website or social media for details of the regular concerts featuring the well-used organ and other instruments.

A simple burial ground lies immediately outside the church, surrounded by the encroaching forest, and a hall was built nearby in 2009 that is now well-used by the congregation and the local community and can be hired for events.
