Church Overview

Classical building with an imposing Ionic portico and three-stage tower and spire, designed and built by William Burn 1813-16. It was substantially renovated by Ian G Lindsay & Partners 1950 and then again by Stewart Tod & Partners in 1993.

It possesses an impressive two-storey ‘country house’ frontage and its light and airy interior contains galleries supported by Ionic columns. There is stained glass from the workshops of Ballantine & Gardiner, Barnett & Son and Powell & Sons and one of Scotland’s most famous stained glass artists Douglas Strachan. The three-manual pipe organ was built by Wadsworth of Manchester in 1880, rebuilt by AE Ingram in 1920 and again by Rushworth and Dreaper in 1950. The building also has a small graveyard and garden to the rear.

The church closed, as part of a Church of Scotland building rationalisation programme, in March 2024. Its former congregation merged with those South Leith Parish Church and Newhaven Parish Church, with the new union called North & South Leith Parish Church. The building was marketed for sale in September 2025.

Closed in 2024, marketed for sale in 2025.
