Church Overview

A rectangular country kirk in cream harling, designed and built 1804-06 by architect John Stewart, possessing classical touches of round-headed windows and swagged urns on the gables. The interior was entirely re-configured in 1928 by architect John Jeffrey Waddell who also designed the pulpit, lectern, communion table, font and elders’ stall, which all date from this renovation.

The graveyard has a good selection of headstones from the late 18th century onwards displaying winged angel heads, memento mori and Adam and Eve. There are also three iron mortsafes (two for adult coffins, one for a child’s) that once protected the recently buried dead from attentions of bodysnatchers.

The graveyard also contains an important 8th century Pictish cross-slab showing a horse above a spear entwined with a serpent.
