Church Overview
A handsome Gothic church, positioned on a commanding terraced location overlooking Tweed Green and the River Tweed below. It was built 1875-77 to designs by the celebrated architectural partnership of John Dick Peddie & Charles Kinnear, in memory of Thomas Leckie, the first pastor of the local Associate Burgher Congregation from 1794-1821. The building was gifted, in trust, by the surviving members of his family, who included a condition that it must always retain its original name.
Following a union in 1976 with members of the nearby St Andrews Church the two congregations chose to come together and sell the St Andrews building, calling themselves the St Andrew’s Leckie Church, but keeping their building’s formal name. Its interior was substantially remodelled to accommodate the needs of the enlarged congregation, with its wooden pews removed and replaced with movable seating to make the building more multi-functional. The pipe organ was also removed at the same time, which allowed the apse to be opened out and incorporated into the main body of the church.
The new apse was decorated with a large cross and a communion table, fashioned from Kauri pine pews removed from the St Andrew’s building, and the ornate wooden pulpit and font were brought over from the St Andrew’s building as well. There is stained glass in the windows around the sanctuary, mainly in mosaic form. The church hall is used for coffee mornings and as a warm community space to gather and enjoy a light bite to eat.
