Church Overview
This has been a Christian site for over 900 years, but the present rectangular Gothic church, with its massive square tower, was designed by noted Scottish architect David Rhind and built in 1863.
There is a chancel below the tower, which had been the Elliot family aisle prior to a major reordering of the church in 1905. The pulpit was also moved, from the south end of the church to the north end, during this refurbishment. The interior of the sanctuary possesses a fine arch-braced timber roof and the chancel a polygonal plaster ceiling. The box pews next to the chancel contain fixed tables within their enclosures.
Memorials to local worthies can be found throughout the building and several medieval stone fragments from the earlier churches on the site have been incorporated into a low wall that serves as the church font. There are are also other medieval stone fragments kept in the churchyard that were discovered nearby. The kirk’s bell is inscribed ‘I was made for Hobkirk in 1745’.
The graveyard outside contains a number of late 17th to 19th century memorials and the foundations of an earlier church on the site are discernible as a grassy platform a short distance north west of the current kirk.
