Church Overview

The present building was erected in 1790 and recast 1860; medieval masonry remains under the foundations. It’s a traditional hall church of rectangular plan with harled walls.  Its coloured glass windows were restored in 2009. Walled burial grounds surround the building, and include many members of the Cheyne and Nicholson families. The oldest memorial is set in the wall of the vestry, dedicated to Andrew Bruce who died in 1717.

The Church of Scotland sold the church in 2021 to a local community charity called the “Friends of Fetlar Kirk” who have kept the building open for community use, weddings, funerals and worship by all denominations.
