Church Overview
This unusual octagonal kirk opened in 1780. Built of brown sandstone, probably at the behest of Archibald Montgomery, the 11th Earl of Eglinton, the heritor. Its pedimented tower is adorned with a short steeple, topped with a brightly decorated weathercock, and clock faces on three of its sides.
It possesses a wood-panelled gallery, held aloft by highly decorative stone columns, that hugs seven of the church’s eight sides. Some have compared the visual effect of the interior to a tiered wedding cake. Its plastered interior was altered by architect William Railton in 1864 and 1875, who also installed the dark panelled pulpit. Among other stained glass windows are a striking visualisation of “Jesus with the Elders” by Gordon Webster (1965) and a nature scene by Susan Bradbury (1982) .
Interesting walled graveyard, with a number of notable 18th century carved stone memorials. Former session house, to left of the gateway, was built in 1774. Has a nearby church hall, in which public events are held and is used by a number of local groups and organisations.
