Church Overview

The parish of South Knapdale was established in 1734 and kirks were eventually built for two settlements in the parish at Inverneill (now a ruin) and Achahoish. The little oblong church at Achahoish was completed in 1775, with a square castellated tower added in the 19th century.

The building was substantially renovated in 1928 and it possesses an ancient font basin that is said to have been relocated from the nearby St Columba’s Cave at the head of Loch Caolisport. Containing many carvings and stone altar, the cave has evidently been a place of Christian pilgrimage and retreat for centuries.

Formerly known as South Knapdale Parish Church, since July 2023, the congregation of Achachoish is united into a single enlarged grouping known as the Parish of Dalriada Mid Argyll, that also includes Lochgilphead, Ardrishaig, Tayvallich and Kilmartin Churches.
