Church Overview
This remarkable modern church was built in 1993 by the Law & Dunbar-Nasmith Partnership on the site of its 18th century predecessor, that was sadly destroyed by fire in 1990. The award-winning design, including a Celtic inspired round tower, is sympathetic to and reminiscent of the building it replaced. The congregations of Elchies and Archiestown Churches were united with Knockando’s in the 20th century and their buildings closed and sold, transferring their names to this site.
Its interior is bright an airy, with very attractive contemporary stained glass, including a large window, depicting the Creation, by Andrew Lawson-Johnson and smaller panels by Gail Steele and Fiona McInnes. The pulpit was brought from Glenlivet Parish Church when it closed and the Communion Table was originally from Elchies Church, but was saved from the wreckage of the 1993 fire at Knockando. The historic watch-house in the kirkyard outside, once used to protect recently buried mortal remains being stolen by body-snatchers, has been converted into a simple chapel that is open 24 per day.
Linked with Rothes Parish Church.
