Church Overview
This delightful Arts & Crafts Gothic church, with its square tower and delicate needle spire, was built by the architect William Laidlaw Carruthers from 1895-97 and its adjacent hall was added later.
The church consists of a nave, single north transept and an apsidal chancel and it benefits from a high open braced-collar roof, with pointed stone arches leading into the chancel and transept. The pulpit is made of locally-grown native oak and the building possesses some noteworthy stained glass of 1897 and 1906 by Ballantine & Gardiner and a two-manual pipe organ by the Wadsworth Brothers of 1902, substantially renovated in 2000 by Sandy Edmonstone.
Previously linked with the historic Inverness Old High Church, that closed as a regular place of worship in 2020, St Stephen’s Church was also closed during a nationwide rationalisation of the Church of Scotland’s property portfolio, holding its final service on Sunday 28 December 2025. Its former congregation has united with that of the Crown Church in Kingsmill Road, with the newly shared space renamed Midmills Church of Scotland.
