Church Overview
The foundation stone of this neat little rectangular Gothic mission church was laid, in a ceremony attended by a large crowd of onlookers, on the 2nd August 1861 and the church opened its doors for worship on Sunday 27th July 1862. Its light and airy interior, with gallery seating above, was originally planned to accommodate around 400 worshippers, its opening service witnessed over 600 local residents crammed into every nook and cranny.
It possesses large, round-headed windows and a corbelled birdcage bellcote, with a small obelisk, that sits directly above the church clock, that has kept excellent time for all those that have passed-by the kirk gates since 1878. The church also has some notable late Victorian stained glass windows by the firm of Ballantine and Gardiner.
The building was substantially refurbished in 1970 and then again in 2020, when its interior was entirely reordered to improve accessibility and make the building a more flexible multi-purpose space, now utilised by various local groups and organisations, including as the local Post Office facility. It was following this recent renovation that the building’s name was changed from Springfield Parish Church to Springfield Community Church, part of Ceres Kemback Springfield Church.
