Church Overview

A very typical oblong church of the Georgian era, built between 1808 and 1810 by noted Scottish architect William Stark, who is primarily remembered today for the interiors of Edinburgh’s Signet Library and in his influence on his architectural pupil William Playfair. It possesses a Tudor-Gothic feel, due to the lattice glazing added in 1905.

The session house was added 1819 by Andrew Cairns and the well used-church hall in 1972. Significant renovations occurred in 1905, under architect Peter MacGregor Chalmers who steepened the angle of the roof pitch and reordered the interior, and further alterations took place again in 1956. The simple sanctuary, with its gallery on three sides, contains stained glass in the east window, depicting Christ with the symbols of Baptism and the Eucharist by John Blyth, installed in 1984. Carved furniture thought to have been introduced by Chalmers in 1905.

Building has been closed since 2020, due to necessity for costly repairs. Congregation meets in nearby church hall instead.
