Church Overview

There has been a church on this site since the mid-16th century, but the current commodious kirk was built in 1838. Fragments of earlier buildings may be seen within its walls, with four skewputts on the eastern gable dated 1620, 1699, 1713 and 1789. The bell, inside the 1838 dated birdcage belfry dates from 1707 and was cast by Robert Maxwell of Edinburgh. The building underwent significant redevelopment in the late 1920s, when a new entrance, toilet and session room were added.

Its roof was rebuilt and its interior was fully refurbished and modernised, from 2014-19, making the sanctuary and facilities more accessible and multi-functional for the congregation and local community. The church contains various memorial plaques and there is a large Victorian Romanesque monument on the east wall of the church for the Christie family of Cowden and an interesting memorial nearby to Matsui, the Japanese gardener who created the Japanese Garden at Cowden Castle for traveller and explorer Ella Christie.

The congregations of Dollar and Glendevon churches linked together with that of Muckhart in 1987 and, on the 1st January 2026, following the ending of worship at Glendevon Church, the congregations of Muckhart and Dollar Churches entered into a formal union, assuming the new name of East Hillfoots Church of Scotland.
