Church Overview

Originally known as Victoria Road Church, then St Andrew’s Church, this landmark Palladian building was built 1902-1903 to the designs of local architect William Dow for the local United Free Church of Scotland congregation. Constructed of red sandstone, hewn from the quarries of Closeburn in Dumfriesshire, it cost £7000 to build and could accommodate 730 worshippers in its sanctuary and galleries and 350 visitors in its large hall and 180 in the small hall.

Dow provided it with a fine Classical exterior, with several robust columns with ornamented capitals flanking its central door and the two side doors, that allowed departing members to exit the galleries. The vestibule was decorated with mosaic tiling and the pulpit, pews, gallery fronts, dado and choir were all constricted of quartered oak. The three-manual pipe organ, installed in 1925, is by Hill & Son and Norman and Beard and, for many years, it was considered to be the best such instrument in the whole town. The windows contain some interesting stained and coloured glass.

The building was transferred to the Church of Scotland in 1929 following a union of the two denominations, after which a series of local congregational mergers took place prior to the building’s closure in 2010. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (Open Heavens, Fife) started with a small congregation in 2006, using rented rooms in Glenrothes, and the Pentecostal denomination purchased the historic church in 2013 and have since brought it back to life with regular weekly services and a variety of community activities and outreach projects.
