Church Overview

Very unusual pyramidal roofed, octagon church, fronted with a square tower topped with a traceried parapet and corner finials, commissioned by Sir Andrew Campbell and built by Andrew McKindley in 1816. The church was extensively renovated in 1961 by architect Ian Lindsay.

Its rubble masonry is white-harled with ashlar sandstone eaves and door and window surrounds and the exterior octagonal shape is reflected in the peaceful interior. Its raked painted pews are still in place facing the fine decorated pulpit. A stone staircase in the vestibule leads up to the Laird’s Loft.

The church houses two fonts, one carved specially for the kirk by a local stonemason in 1956 and a medieval font that was the subject of some controversy in 1925 as the then minister of the church and the 10th Duke of Argyll fought a very public battle over its ownership and provenance.

The surrounding kirkyard contains many interesting stones, ranging in date from the medieval to the modern. The church is now linked with Lochgoilhead Parish Church.
