CHurch Overview

A tall Gothic church, with buttressed nave, piercing lancet windows and a battlemented square tower, designed and built by noted architect William Burn in 1849.

Its interior is clad in eight-foot high wood panelling which draws visitors’ eyes up to the handsome timber boarded ceiling and, in addition to its clock and bell, the tower also houses its organ gallery. There is elegant eight-paned roundel of stained glass by celebrated architect and artist Augustus Welby Pugin also regularly maintains a visitor’s gaze.

The building underwent substantial repairs in 1900, mainly paid for by the Dowager Marchioness of Bute, who is depicted in a stained glass window in the east gable. A carved wooded reredos was installed during these works, above which was placed a stained glass crucifixion scene designed by artist Horatio Walter Lonsdale and produced by the London firm of William Gualbert Saunders.

In the ancient burial ground next to the church sits its ruined and roofless medieval predecessor, St Maelrubha’s Church, which houses a collection of interesting medieval and early modern grave slabs.
