Church Overview

This robust coursed and squared red sandstone T-plan kirk, with its ball finialed apex birdcage belfry and handsome red roof ridge tiles is dated 1781. It was re-roofed and renovated in 1894, by architect James Barbour of Dumfries, who also added small porches to the east and to west gables and refurbished its galleried interior.

Visitors to the kirkyard outside will also note the gabled former hearse house and some fine 17th-19th century stone memorials, including that of Robert Paterson, the stonemason who is said to have inspired the titular character of Sir Walter Scott’s “Old Mortality”.

On 1st January 2025, the congregations of Caerlaverock and Troqueer Parish Churches formally united and now meet in the latter building for regular services, with the status of Caerlaverock changed to a “Local Mission Church” while its future is decided.
