The Listed Places of Worship Grants Scheme enables listed places of worship to claim back a portion of the VAT incurred for repairs and necessary alterations to listed buildings mainly used for public worship. As part of Budget 2012, the Government announced the withdrawal of the zero rate of VAT for approved alterations to listed buildings, effective from 1 October 2012. The Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme was extended to offset the financial impact of the VAT change on listed places of worship undertaking alteration works. The budget was increased to allow for the increased value of claims. Under the extended scheme, to date, 100% of eligible VAT has been recovered.
