Church Overview

Built 1854-56 as a new home for the local United Presbyterian Church, the small building was enlarged in 1870 to accommodate its growing congregation. In 1900 it became South Ronaldsay United North United Free Church and in 1929 South Ronaldsay St Margaret’s Church of Scotland. Following subsequent unions and the rationalisation of local church buildings, its central location in the village of St Margaret’s Hope led to it being designated as the principal place of worship for the Parish of South Ronaldsay & Burray and today it is often known simply as the Hope Church.

A total refurbishment of the interior in 2009 provided the congregation and local community with accommodation and facilities that are well used for a variety of purposes. Its Communion table and font came from the former St Lawrence’s Church, Burray.
