Church Overview

A church at ‘Mereboda’ or Morebattle, dedicated to St Lawrence, is recorded as belonging to the Diocese of Glasgow from about 1116. The ancient medieval building was burned down by English forces during the “Rough Wooing” campaign of 1544 and rebuilt some time after. The present structure dates substantially from 1757, with extensions having been made in 1899 and 1903.

It is oblong in plan, with chancel, porch and vestry which seem to be additions. Look out for the plan in the porch, which highlights the extensive archaeological work carried out there in the early 1900s, and the inscriptions painted on fabric on the west wall.

Morebattle Parish Church is a Destination Hub on our St Cuthbert Pilgrim Journey. It is linked today with the historic churches at Yetholm, Linton, Hownam and Hoselaw into as single congregation known as the Cheviot Churches.
