Church Overview
The Cumnock Congregational Church established itself with twelve founding members in 1838, in a hall in Black Bull Close. As the congregation grew they purchased a building on Cumnock Square in 1847 and converted this into a church. By the 1880s, they had outgrown this building and raised sufficient funds to construct the church they still use today.
Designed by Ayr architect John Murdoch and capable of holding 400 sitters, work began on this neat little Neo-Gothic, blonde sandstone church in March 1882 and it was formally opened on the 18th February 1883. Politician and trade-unionist Keir Hardie, a founder of the Labour Party and its first ever MP, served on the church’s Diaconate. It possesses an impressive 2-manual organ with eleven ranks of pipes.
