Church Overview
Built next to a modest ‘hall church’ of 1960, that had been provided by Bathgate Town Council, construction of this dramatic modern church, to designs of the firm of Wheeler & Sproson, began in 1964 and was completed in 1965. The sanctuary seats 400 and has a unique hyperbolic paraboloid (saddle-shaped) roof finished internally with timber.
Windows, between the roof and the walls, are filled with sheets of bold patterned yellow, blue and clear glass, that flood the interior with light. The original, post war interior is largely intact, with angled fixed pews lining either side of the sanctuary. The ceiling is lined with Columbian pine and a wave-shaped pulpit extends from the wall. It also possesses an unusual glass baptismal font on a metal stand.
The church received full parish status in 1974, having previously being an extension charge. Its original bellcote proved to be unstable by the 1970s and it was eventually removed for safety reasons in 2003 and other structural repairs were carried out elsewhere in the building. The church was given C-listed status in 2022.
